litestarHow do I get past the fear?

First of all, realize you deserve to have a happy and healthy life. It might not be easy to get there, but you know that what you have now is NOT easy. It's hard to feel sad and overwhelmed and unaccepted. You're worth the work! Never forget that.

It is scary to lose weight. What happens if you "blow it" and put it back on? How do you handle the attention from guys? What happens when people start telling you how good you look? Pretty weird stuff, huh?

Anyway, the advice I would pass along is take it day by day. The future will take care of itself when you get there. Right now, you don't have the "tools" to handle those problems I mentioned because you have not yet got there. Think of when you were a little girl. I bet it seemed so frightening to go to high school, right? But, as you got older and you went through the other grades and junior high, you learned things you didn't' know as a small child. With those tools, you figured out how to get through high school. If you were 7 years old and suddenly dropped into 11th grade, you'd freak! But you don't (hopefully!) as you've learned.

As you lose weight, you will pick up tools too. You'll learn how to handle people who pressure you to eat. You'll understand how to accept the failures and the frustrations. You'll learn to like a whole new you. It's scary to try; it's easy to pretend not to.

Set up a reward when you lose 5 pounds. If you've already lost 5 pounds, good for you. Set up one for the next 5. Set up a whole series of rewards for each five pounds. and each time you get there, do it! (Um, don't make it food for a reward, ok?) Then write down in your journal (if you don't have one, buy one - even a cheap spiral notebook) how good you feel about what you've done. Each night, write down 3 things that you do well. Even if others say "it's no big deal," if you think it is - WRITE IT DOWN! Smile about what you've done.

When things get overwhelming, look at your journal. Wait 10 minutes before you decide to give up.

Treat yourself special.
